There have been a series of leaks and reports that implicate the Secretary of Defense.  The highest ranking military official, Lieutenant General Ricardo Sanchez, may now receive a promotion!  Here is the official AFPS news item:

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, Oct. 21, 2004 – An Army staff sergeant who pleaded guilty to several charges Oct. 20 stemming from detainee abuse at Iraq's Abu Ghraib prison was sentenced at a court-martial in Baghdad today.

A military judge sentenced Staff Sgt. Ivan L. Fredrick to be reduced in rank to private, to forfeit all pay and allowances, to be dishonorably discharged and to be confined for 10 years. As a result of a pretrial agreement, Fredrick's confinement will be reduced to eight years.

The soldier had pleaded guilty to conspiracy, dereliction of duty, maltreatment of detainees, assaulting a detainee and committing an indecent act.
